Learning to see beyond the obvious

Ever since I was a child, I’d always have a book in hand. My earliest memory of books was of my grand mother reading to me at bedtime and teaching me to read when I was about 4 years old. I still remember fondly the many folktales that read to me and as an adult, some of those tales stuck.

As I got older and my interest grew, my love of books grew and along with this my love of quotes. From early on, I began writing my favourite my favourite quotes down and those that have impacted have stuck in mind.

“Wherever you are standing and taking a picture, always remember to look behind you” – Unknown

I am paraphrasing the above quote of course since I do not quite remember who said it but I am quite sure that it was a photographer. This particular quote stuck in my mind because like many people, I am a creature of habit. I like what I like and I simply let my vision guide me when it comes to my photography. This means that I often get tunnel vision.

Once I came across this quote, I kept it in mind as a reminder to observe my surrounding a lot more.

The addition of new skyscrapers in and around London means that the the skyline is ever changing. Particularly in central London, the skyscraper are in cluster and these form interesting patterns and shape from various point of view and each I look up I find see something new and interesting to capture. These were things that I did not pay much attention to before.

Although, this is an impactful quote for me, I still fail to remember the author’s name or its phrasing to at least give him or her credit.

  1. One of my favorite quotes is on the top of your website. You quote Ansel Adams as saying that “you do not take a photograph you make it.” Exactly.

Here’s a humble suggestion born out of admiration: I think your comment that you’re happy if you get one good image a year is perhaps a bit outdated. Given your current work, it sets the bar too low. Just a thought…

May all your dreams come true in 2021.

That quote is definitely a favourite for me too. A few words that says a lot. As for your thought, it’s perhaps because I am too hard on myself.
Thanks for the wonderful wishes and I wish the same to you too.

      1. Own and embrace your victories. Pay no attention to the losses. Follow your own moral and artistic compass. And just move forward.

I try to do that but I definitely need to get better at it 😊

      3. It is a learned skill. Keep working on it.

      4. Some of my more adventurous stuff doesn’t get a whole lot of likes. So be it.

I find that what people like have more to do with their taste and preferences than the photographer’s skill.

      6. I’m inclined to agree.
