Born in 1940, Galen Rowell was introduced to the wilderness at a very young age. He began climbing mountains at the age ten and made his first roped climb in Yosemite Valley at the age of the age sixteen.

Taking photographs for him was a way to share his experiences with his family and friends.

He then became a full time photographer in 1972. Less than a year later, he carried out his first major magazine assignment – a cover stay for National Geographic.

Rowell was an active participant in the images he made, advocated a very intentional creative process. Like Ansel Adams gave us the Zone System, Rowell pioneered the graduated Neutral Density filters that a lot of us including myself use on a regular basis. On this project, he collaborated with Singh-Ray.

In the last 20years of his life, he made more than 35 journeys to the mountains of Nepal, India, Pakistan, China, Tibet, Africa, Alaska, Canada, Siberia, New Zealand, Norway and Patagonia.
